The Effects of Sun Exposure on the Skin: Adjusting Your Skincare Routine for Summer

The sun has finally returned! For myself, there is nothing greater than the sunshine, greenery and pops of colour that surround me during this beautiful season. While going outside to enjoy the great outdoors after being cooped up during these cold winter months, there are still a few key points in making sure that you continue to look and feel your best during the summer!

SWITCH TO SUMMER SKINCARE

As the days grow longer and the warmth of summer returns, we find ourselves eagerly trading winter coats for lighter clothing and spending more time outdoors. Our mood and energy seem lifted by the shift in seasons; however, one thing is for sure… we also need to change the way we pamper our skin. Just as we adjust our wardrobes for warmer weather, our skincare routine also needs to adapt to meet the skin’s changing needs.

During the winter months, our skin is regularly exposed to brisk, cold air, indoor heating, and dry conditions. These environmental factors can leave it feeling dehydrated, sensitive, and lacking in radiance. Now, as summer approaches, everything changes. We are faced with heat, humidity, increased perspiration, and stronger UV exposure. These factors affect the skin in different ways. It is interesting how products that once felt nourishing in winter may suddenly feel heavy and no longer suit our skin’s needs.

DON’T FORGET YOUR SUNSCREEN!

There is no doubt that one of the most important seasonal shifts is the increased need for sun protection. Ultraviolet (UV) rays are a major contributing factor to premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and long-term skin damage. We’re referring to fine lines, dryness, and age spots that gradually appear over time. Even on cloudy or overcast days, UV rays can penetrate the skin and contribute to cumulative damage.

As a result, daily sunscreen is essential during the summer months. A broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30 should be applied every morning, not only for beach days or vacations. Daily routines like walking, driving, gardening, or sitting outdoors all add up in terms of sun exposure. Consistency with sunscreen use makes a meaningful difference over time in protecting the skin from long-term damage.

Summer is also a good opportunity to simplify and lighten your skincare routine. Rich creams and heavier moisturizers that feel comforting in winter can often be replaced with lighter lotions, gel-based moisturizers, or hydrating serums. These help keep skin balanced and hydrated without feeling weighed down in the heat.

It is also important not to overlook cleansing during warmer weather. Sweat, sunscreen, excess oil, and environmental pollutants can build up more quickly, increasing the likelihood of clogged pores or breakouts. A gentle cleanser used consistently, sometimes paired with light exfoliation, can help maintain a clearer and brighter complexion throughout the season.

HYDRATE! HYDRATE! HYDRATE!

Hydrated summer skin

Keeping yourself hydrated plays a key role in summer skin health. While dry skin is often associated with winter, the combination of heat, sun exposure, air conditioning, chlorine, and dehydration can leave skin feeling stressed and depleted in summer as well. Drinking enough water and using skincare products with hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or aloe vera can help support the skin barrier and maintain a healthy glow.

It is also worth remembering the often-forgotten areas when applying sunscreen. The lips, neck, chest, and hands are frequently exposed and are often among the first areas to show signs of sun damage and aging. Extending SPF protection to these areas can make a meaningful difference over time. Protective habits such as wearing sunglasses, hats, and seeking shade during peak UV hours further support overall skin health.

ENJOY YOUR SUMMER AND HEALTHY SKIN

Summer is meant to be enjoyed. Whether it is time spent at the cottage, by the pool, in the garden, or simply enjoying a sunny afternoon walk, skincare should support your lifestyle rather than limit it. Small seasonal adjustments can go a long way in protecting your skin’s health and maintaining its natural radiance.

To get a head start on the season and ensure you have the right products on hand, meet with your skincare specialist to ensure you are set up with everything you need for healthy, hydrated, glowing skin.

As the summer sun returns, healthy skin is not about avoiding sunshine altogether. It is about enjoying it wisely, protecting your skin consistently, and giving it the care it needs to stay strong, balanced, and glowing throughout the season.
