Spring has arrived, bringing new life and blossoms on the horizon. The beauty of nature surrounds us, welcoming us with splendid colours and renewed energy. Fresh blooms and budding plants peek through the earth, reaching for the warmth of the sun. As we’re drawn outdoors to embrace the sunshine, it’s important to remember the sun’s potentially harmful effects on our skin. That’s why protecting your skin from sun damage is essential. While it may seem like just another task to add to an already busy routine, maintaining healthy skin doesn’t have to be complicated. It all starts with sunscreen

One important factor to consider is the SPF level, which varies between products. In reality, many people don’t fully understand what those numbers mean. Let’s break it down briefly. For example, a sunscreen with an SPF 30 will block about 97% of UVB (Ultraviolet B) rays, while SPF 50 blocks approximately 98%. It’s important to remember that regardless of the SPF level, it’s recommended that you reapply it throughout the day. Many moisturizers and makeup products now contain SPF for added protection.

Now that we’ve mentioned UVB, you’re likely wondering what exactly it means. When we talk about protecting our skin from the sun, we’re referring to ultraviolet (UV) rays. These rays are a form of radiation from the sun, and there are two main types that affect the skin in different ways. UVA rays (think A for aging) penetrate deep into the skin. They can cause premature aging, such as wrinkles and sunspots, and are present all year round—even on cloudy days. UVA rays can also pass through glass, like windows or car windshields. The tricky part? They don’t cause sunburns, so people often underestimate their impact. But make no mistake—they’re a major culprit behind long-term skin damage.

UVB rays (think B for burning) damage the top layer of the skin and are the primary cause of sunburns. These rays are strongest in the spring and summer and don’t pass through glass, but they’re highly damaging during outdoor activities. Most importantly, UVB rays play a key role in the development of skin cancer. To protect yourself, it’s important to adopt simple but effective sun-safe habits. Teach your kids about the importance of sunscreen early—it helps to build lifelong habits that promote healthy skin. Before going outside, make sure to apply sunscreen 15–30 minutes in advance. This gives it time to fully bind to the skin and begin working effectively.

If you’re swimming or involved in strenuous activities, be sure to reapply sunscreen every two hours. And remember, UV rays don’t take the day off just because the sky is overcast. Even on cloudy days, sunscreen is a must. Lastly, don’t forget those often-overlooked areas like your ears, neck, back, and the tops of your feet. These spots are just as vulnerable and deserve protection too. Taking care of your skin doesn’t have to be a burden—it can be a simple act of self-care that helps you feel confident and protected. Whether you’re heading out for a walk, playing with the kids, or relaxing on a patio, don’t forget that little bottle of sunshine armour. Your future self will thank you for it!
